The effect of mixing red and yellow is always festive; but sometimes the primaries alone seem to lack a sophistication that mixtures of gold and apricot and orange embrace. The roses in this list manage to produce colors in this range with some complexity. The result is interesting as well as being 'splashy.' Except for this, the roses on the list may appear to have little or nothing in common. Compare Lafter's subtle tanish color splashed with yellow and orange to Broadway's more saturated apricot or coral colors; or compare the almost purely red and yellow Joseph's Coat with these and it is only when considering the underlying pigmentation that the group might make sense.
From a gardening perspective it seems that few of these roses manages to wow with either their vigor or disease resistance. But those willing to coddle roses will find some perennial favorites: Palmetto Sunrise, Hot Tamale, Granada, and Glowing Peace in addition to the ones mentioned.
Pictured is Joseph's Coat. This is an old and much loved rose. Though it never seems very productive in the flowering department, its flowers are bright and interesting, and it is better furnished with bright green healthy foliage than most large flowered climbers.
